Generators and Power for Food Trucks: Petrol vs LPG vs Battery Stations
Power is the quietest way to lose a trading day. The fridge climbs past 8°C, the card reader dies, the coffee machine sulks. None of it announces itself the way an empty gas bottle does. This guide compares the three ways to carry your own electricity (petrol generators, LPG, battery power stations) and shows which setup actually fits how UK vendors trade.
Work Out What You Actually Draw
American food truck guides talk about 10kW generators because American trucks fry on electricity. Most UK trucks don't. Gas does the heat and electricity does everything else, which changes the maths completely. A typical UK setup draws far less than the internet suggests: a fridge pulls 100-300W continuously and LED lighting barely registers. The till and card reader are trivial. The heavy hitters are espresso machines (2-3kW), soft-serve and slush machines, blenders, anything with a heating element.
Add up your true list before buying anything. For context, the standard 16-amp mains hook-up you get at organised events delivers about 3.7kW. If your kit runs happily on a festival hook-up then a modest generator or a decent battery covers you. If it doesn't, you already know, because the hook-up trips.

Petrol Inverter Generators
The default answer, for good reason. Petrol carries a lot of energy in a small can and you can refuel at any forecourt on the way to the pitch.
The benchmark is the Honda EU22i: 2.2kW peak, quiet inverter output that's safe for electronics, bulletproof reputation, around £1,100 to £1,400 depending on the retailer. The budget route is a 3.2-3.5kW inverter unit from the likes of Hyundai or Champion at £400 to £700. More power for less money. The exchange is more weight and more noise. Either way, buy an inverter generator. The old open-frame builders' units are cheaper still and events increasingly refuse them on noise alone.
The downsides are practical rather than fatal. You're storing petrol, which plenty of venues restrict and most marquee setups flat-out ban. Servicing is real (oil, plugs, carburettors gum up over winter). And even quiet generators aren't silent, which matters at weddings around speech time.
LPG and Dual-Fuel Generators
A growing middle path: generators that run on the same propane bottles as your cooking kit. Dual-fuel models switch between petrol and gas, and LPG conversion kits exist for popular petrol units.
The appeal is storage and logistics. You're already carrying gas safely (ventilation and securing sorted), so running the generator off a bottle removes the petrol can from the van entirely. Organisers tend to prefer that too. LPG burns cleaner (kinder to the engine on long runs) and bottled gas doesn't go stale over winter the way petrol does.
The trade-offs: slightly less output than the same engine on petrol, and the gas side of the setup becomes part of your annual safety conversation. Battery Power Stations
The new option, the one changing where you can trade. A big LFP power station (the 2-3.6kWh class from EcoFlow, Bluetti, Jackery, that end of the market) costs roughly £1,500 to £3,000 and runs in total silence with zero fumes. That means indoor venues, marquees, ceremony-adjacent pitches and every event that's banned generators outright.
The maths is the thing to respect. A 3.6kWh unit runs a 200W fridge for most of a weekend. It runs the till and lights for a week. Point an espresso machine at it and the picture changes: 2.5kW of draw empties 3.6kWh in under 90 minutes of solid running. Batteries suit steady low draws and short heavy bursts, not all-day heating elements.
Recharging in a field is the other honest limit. Solar panels help on bright days and most units charge from the van while you drive. Neither rescues you mid-service on a wet Saturday. Which is why the pattern that actually works for heavier users is hybrid: battery for the quiet, clean, silent hours, with a small generator to recharge it away from the customers.
The Noise Rules Nobody Reads
Event packs increasingly specify noise limits for generators. Some ban petrol units entirely. Wedding venues are stricter still. Inverter generators in the Honda class are genuinely quiet. Budget units are louder than their spec sheets suggest, since those figures get measured at distance under gentle load.
Three habits keep you booked: ask about power rules before paying for the pitch, position the generator away from your hatch and your neighbours, carry a heavy-duty extension lead so you've got options. The trader with the droning open-frame unit gets remembered, not warmly.

Which Setup for Which Trader
Gas-cooking truck with electrics for fridge and till. A 2.2kW inverter generator covers you with headroom, and a mid-size battery station could replace it entirely if your events offer hook-up half the time. This is the cheapest problem on this page.
Coffee trailer. The espresso machine rules everything. You want the biggest inverter generator your noise rules allow, or a serious battery bank sized with brutal honesty about your busiest hour. Plenty of coffee setups run dual: battery for the quiet trade, generator for the rush.
Desserts, ice cream, slush. Freezers and compressors want continuous power with proper startup headroom. A quality 2.2kW inverter handles a couple of units. Check the startup surge on your kit, since compressors draw multiples of their running wattage for a moment.
Wedding and indoor-heavy diaries. Battery first. Silence is a bookable feature and "no generator noise during the ceremony" belongs in your pitch. Keep the small generator in the van for recharging out of earshot.
Questions Vendors Actually Ask
Will a 2.2kW generator run an espresso machine?
A single-group machine, usually yes, just. Watch the element's draw when steaming and don't stack the blender on top mid-shot. Two-group machines want more than 2.2kW in real use, which is why serious coffee setups size up or split the load across battery and generator.
Are petrol generators banned at festivals?
Some events ban them and more restrict them by noise level or position. Marquee companies have their own rules about fuel storage on top. It varies enough that the only safe habit is asking at application time. The question costs nothing. Finding out at the gate costs the day.
Can I charge a battery station from the van while driving?
Yes. A 12V connection or a proper DC-DC charger does it, though slowly compared to mains. An hour's drive puts a useful top-up into a small unit and a dent into a big one. Treat van charging as maintenance between events, not your main charging plan.
Does the generator itself need PAT testing?
The appliances you plug into it need testing and organisers will want to see those records. The generator itself usually sits outside PAT testing, under your general kit checks instead. Bring its manual and service record to bigger events anyway. An LPG-fed generator's gas connection belongs in your annual gas inspection.
Is solar worth carrying?
As a top-up for a battery station on a bright pitch day, yes. It's free power once bought. As your primary plan for UK weather, no. Every battery-first trader we know treats solar as a bonus and keeps another way to charge.
The Bottom Line
Audit the draw before you spend a pound, because most UK trucks need less power than they think. Petrol inverters remain the workhorse, LPG makes the logistics tidier if you're carrying bottles anyway, and batteries have earned a real place wherever silence sells or generators are banned. The strongest setups mix two of the three. The weakest setup is the one bought on wattage alone, three days before the season starts.
