How to Use This Template
This checklist covers everything you need to start a street food or mobile catering business in the UK, in the order you need to do it. It includes business structure and registration (sole trader or limited company), food business registration with your local authority (at least 28 days before trading), Level 2 Food Hygiene certification, vehicle or trailer purchase and conversion, gas safety certification, public liability insurance (minimum £5 million for most events), equipment purchases, menu development and costing, brand and design, market and event applications, and your first event prep.
Work through it sequentially — some items depend on others. You can't register as a food business without an address, and you can't get a Gas Safe certificate without a completed gas installation. Budget realistically: a basic street food setup (trailer, equipment, branding) starts at around £15,000-£20,000, and a converted van at £25,000-£50,000 depending on specification.
This checklist stops you from making the expensive mistakes that catch out new vendors — like buying a van before checking it fits through market access gates, or booking your first event before your gas certificate arrives. Print it out, work through it methodically, and tick off each item as it's completed.
